This is a picture of a YTL-sponsored Wi-Fi tower in the midst of being setup at a primary school somewhere in Taman P. Ramlee Wangsa Maju. According to YTL employees the Education Ministry has approved the YTL sponsorship and towers such as these will be erected in most if not all schools.

Bersih 2.0- to protest or not?

Bersih 2.0- to go or not to go? That must the question popping in everyone's minds especially those who have not attended street demos of that kind before. It's daunting, especially when the Home Minister promises to use the ISA on the Bersih participants caught on 9th July 2011. Not to mention the water canons, smoke-grenades, riot shields and batons awaiting. Some say let the ballot box do the talking, and street protests are not the way.


Wangsa Maju had some fair experience in a street demo back in 2008. The demo was held at the DBKL HQ at Jalan Raja Laut and not in Wangsa Maju though. You see, somewhere in May 2008, after the 14th General Election, the DBKL saw fit to demolish about 8 major hawker areas in Desa Setapak and few other areas in Wangsa Maju. The reason for doing so was well, not a new reason- it was over a permit issue which spanned over more than a decade (I think). Yes, the hawkers, who had been operating a long time there, right on Government 'land', did not have the proper permits to build permanent structures. Some of the hawkers alleged that they had tried applying for permits for years but  DBKL never approved them. So on the fateful day of 21st May 2008, while the Wangsa Maju MP was still at a Parliament session, the DBKL came with heavyweight equipment and ran the stalls to the ground. The machinery was so heavy that it left potholes on the tarred road of Desa Setapak.



Such operations may be valid from the Town Council's viewpoint especially when it is a permit issue, but it causes more anguish when the demolishing of the illegal stalls are race-selected- ie Chinese stalls demolished but not the illegal stalls own by Malays sitting next to the Chinese-owned stalls. Many people were were saying- 'what the hell is this, DBKL?'

There were various forms of protest- direct protest came from Wee Choo Keong, the hawkers, the blogs, the graffiti artists and indirect protests were from the Wangsa Maju community itself. The issue was more than a permit matter- it was a show of barbaric racism from DBKL.

The Wangsa Maju hawkers, various Wangsa Maju folk and Wee Choo Keong organized a street protest right in front of the DBKL building at Jalan Raja Laut. The street protest was supported by the 11 freshly-elected Kuala Lumpur MPs. Yes, election was held at March 2008 remember? Just couple of months after the GE, DBKL 'show power dee?'

Wee Choo Keong was very hands on- he taught the hawkers how to protest, how to organize it and even taught the protesters how to write the place cards, as most of the protesters then were first-timers. Without his mentorship, the protest would have never succeeded. The believe was, if something was wrong, we had to speak up.

The Bersih 2.0 walk on July 9th, is about fair and free elections- core pillars of Malaysia's democratic foundation.  The ballot box, through the people, may do its talking every four years. However, many things happen between elections. Many of those 'happenings' have been threats to democracy and the right to have a fair election. It is the peoples' action in between the four years that makes sure the country stays its democratic course.

Hill side development again, not again?

One of my friends who is staying in Taman Melati was very pissed off.

If I am in his position, I would too.

My friend bought a condo unit in Platinium Hill so that his family can enjoy fresh air, nice breeze from the wonderfully forested hill accross the highway.

• Development in Hillside must observe the following general guide:

a) To preserve the existing character of areas with mature trees

b) To keep the cutting of existing mature trees to a minimum, and ensure adequate replacement of trees that are removed.

c) To keep the cutting of the existing natural topography to a minimum

d) To maintain the low density detached residential character of the area

e) To maintain existing road widths and road network

f ) To control building heights such that they do not exceed the existing tree heights.

ok, so must keep the buildings lower than the trees and not to cut too many trees eh?

Helluva lot of trees were cut down (and need to be replanted???), the landscape has been changed so much that the resident monkeys would have problem recognising it and I do not think any trees can grow to be as tall as those lovely classy condos.

Following the Bukit Antarabangsa landslide which killed five people and forced thousands to evacuate their homes, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had called on local authorities to ban all hillside development.

So after the Highland Towers tragedy and another landslide which killed some more, the then DPM said something very logical...only for this rebuke

Despite the controversies involving hillside development, there will be no blanket ban on such projects.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohamed, who disclosed this, said this was because the country's population was increasing and land was needed for development.

Something never change, even though you got a promotion, eh?

Alamak, apa terjadi kepada pengundi di Wangsa Maju?

Baru-baru ini, saya menerima khabar bahawa mungkin ada perubahan dalam pengundian Kerusi Parlimen P116 yang telah dimenang tipis oleh calon PKR, YB Wee Choo Keong pada tanggal 8 March 2008.


Salah satu khabar angin nan sya terima adalah bahawa mungkin Taman Melati sehingga ke Setapak Garden akan dipecahkan dan dijadikan kerusi parlimen yang baru. Setapak Garden itu jika tak silap saya kawasan majoriti pengundinya kaum Cina.


Jika tujuan pemecahan ini adalah kerana meringankan beban wakil rakyat terhadap begitu ramai pengundi, saya setuju. Bahkan ramai yang menduduki kawasan Wangsa Maju terdiri daripada pelajar Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman dan UNITAR serta ramai lagi perantau yang cari makan di ibu kota yang besar kemungkinannya mengundi di tempat lain.


Menurut sumber ini jumlah pengundi berdaftar di Wangsa Maju adalah 54,509.

Begitu juga untuk kawasan Seputeh (jumlah undi 76,891), Cheras (jumlah pengundi 68,725).


Jika Putrajaya (jumlah pengundi 6,608) diperuntukan seorang ahli Parlimen, maka Wanga Maju, Seputeh dan Cheras memerlukan sekurang-kurangnya 7 orang YB untuk setiap kawasan tersebut.


Dalam kanta mata rakyat bukan pengundi Putrajaya, kerusi Putrajaya bermaksud bahawa pegawai-pegawai kerajaan berkantor hawa dingin, bermangkuk nasi besi, berpencen dan layak menerima layanan khas rawatan hospital awam serta Keretapi Tanah Melayu perlu perhatian khas seorang YB serta seorang Menteri Wilayah Persekutuan. Wah, nilai pengundi di situ....memang bertuah......


Saya harap pihak Parlimen dan SPR dapat melihat keperluan dan kewarasan melayan rakyat Malaysia secara adil. Jika tidak, laungan 1Malaysia itu mungkin boleh dipertikaikan sebagai setakat omong kosong sahaja.


Bagaimanapun, satu perkara yang aneh juga telah berlaku. Seorang pengundi tua yang sekian lamanya mengundi di Wangsa Maju, dalam inisiatif sendiri mengenal pasti tempat mengundi terbaharunya, tersentak melihat beliau telah dipindah tanpa pengetahuannya daripada Wangsa Maju (majority PKR 150 undi) kepada Setiawangsa (majority UMNO 19,699, terima kasih kem tentera).




Nota: Setapak Permai memang kawasan Wangsa Maju dan waris-waris warga usia emas di situ telah menerima sumbangan mesra usia emas kerajaan Selangor daripada pejabat perkhidmatan Wangsa Maju

Mengapa ini berlaku? Apakah sebabnya? Mengapa memindahkan seorang tua tanpa memaklumkan beliau dan dalam lingkungan usia 70 tahun, beliau mungkin tidak celik komputer dan internet. Perbuatan ini pada hemat saya tidak menghormati dan memahami keadaan dan kesihatan warga usia emas kita. Budaya semua masyarakat Malaysia harus merangkimi nilai murni menjaga kesejahteraan orang tua kita dan SPR nampaknya kurang peka bahkan menyusahkan warga usia emas sahaja. Jika saya nampaknya marah, menang saya marah. Of course I am pissed! Who does not have ageing parents or grandparents?

Sekiranya ana mendaftar di tempat pilihan ana, maka itulah hasrat ana nak mengundi dan bersuara sebagai rakyat dalam sebuah negara demokrasi. Bila ana kata tempat A ana mengundi, SPR dulu kata okay dipersilakan tetapi lepas itu SPR tukar pendiriannya tetapi tidak memaklumkan ana maka itu sejenis PENIPUAN - "misrepresentation"

Jika atas sebab-sebab teknikal yang memerlukan ubahsuaian tempat mengundi, setidak-tidaknya SPR harus memberitahu para pengundi yang terlibat serta menjelaskan sebab-sebabnya. Saman trafik pun macam itu. Sebagai institusi yang bertanggungjawab, tak perlulah orang luar cuba ajar SPR menjalankan fungsinya. You are paid to do this job for decades and by golly you do it right.


SPR harus berfikir dari segi kemudahan awam. Bayangkan ramai pengundi telah menghadiri diri di tempat mengundi menurut pengalaman dulu tetapi “diserang hendap” oleh pertukaran ini. Keadaan lalu-lintas hari mengundi akan merumitkan perjalanan rakyat Malaysia yang bertanggungjawab (yang malas dan culas tidak terjejas), sumber minyak dan masa pun dibazirkan.


Bagi pengundi-pengundi terlibat yang berurus dengan pusat perkhidmatan wakil rakyat masing-masing, adakah ini bermaksud beliau kena “pindahkan” kes mereka dari seorang YB kepada seorang YB yang lain?

Ataupun YB terpaksa meneruskan kes aduan pengundi bekas kawasan undinya sehingga kehilangan masa untuk melayan dan berkhidmat untuk pengundi-pengundi di “kawasan baru” beliau.

Para pengundi pula akan kehilangan pengalaman dan pengetahuan YB dahulu dan YB yang baru pula kena memahami kes aduan dari mula semula lagi.


Dalam cogankata terpanas kini, Rakyat DiUtamakan, tetapi saya tidak nampak apa-apa manfaat kepada rakyat jelata daripada operasi sunyi senyap macam ini. Gaji dan pencen pegawai-pegawai SPR dibiayai rakyat jelata dan mereka bertanggungjawab jua menjelaskan operasi mereka kepada kita. Jika tak silap saya rumah bekas pengerusi SPR pernah dilontar bom beg cat dan saya pasti itu bukan angkara ah long yang pakar taktik ini. Apakah sebabnya ana tak tahu tetapi mungkin kerana pernah ada pihak yang tidak puas dengan mutu perkhidmatan beliau.

Ini bukan masalah Wanga Maju sahaja tetapi masalah Malaysia. Isyarat pembayar cukai kepada Pentadbiran BN adalah jika awak janji rakyat diutamakan, peranan SPR juga harus dirangkumi juga.

H1N1 reveals some truth about an important civil servant

When I was a wee lad, teachers are feared and respected as paragon of virtues, morally impeccable and guidance to our minds & souls.

And the Headmaster ranks even higher than teachers.

Parents would try their best to enroll their kids to the best schools so that they can be taught and guided by the best teachers. Teachers play a vital part in the development of our children and in Mandarin, there is a proverb that states "Teachers Are The Engineers Of The Soul".

What if there is a case of "Harapkan Pagar, Pagar Makan Padi"? Would any right minded parents feel comfortable with this kind of Head leading the school of your children are attending?

"The case is not confirmed. What you heard about the student's class being in quarantine is not true," said school principal, Hajjah Rokiah.

Malay Mail spoke to three of them (note:students) and they said all the pupils in that particular class had been absent yesterday. And the class was quarantined.

The notable points are:

1) As a HM, we expect a higher level of integrity and professionalism than say, scoundrels, dodgers and liars;

2) It is one thing to tell a white lie to a close friend with limited consequences, it is a different ball game all together when you lie to the press, the public or a Member of Parliament;

3) Residents of Wangsa Maju are neither outraged or bothered by this gross misconduct by an official earning her pay from tax payers' money;

4) The relevant authorities within the education establishment have yet to respond to this. Perhaps they are more interested to decide whether to call it H1N1 or selsama babi so as to make our local newscasters on TV3 have an easier life (now we all know where Rais Yatim's priority lies in the time of national crises);

5) Why the HM is so fearful of the truth? To guard her face? To maintain her reputation? An irrational fear of being frank after decades of ISA, OSA or she is merely a product of a 50 years old administration that discourages free dissemination of relevant information?

6) In addition to local residents, Wangsa Maju has 1 university (UNITAR) and 2 colleges (TARC and Cosmopolitan College), plus those who have graduated and continue staying in Wangsa Maju. Students and graduates there travel all over Malaysia during weekends to get back home or hangout in city centre.

Imagine the risk of H1N1 spreading out like from these potential carriers. Wangsa Maju should be classified as a potential high risk infection transfer source and the Health Ministry should set up a monitoring centre here. The sooner the truth is out, the sooner residents are aware of the risk and the sooner relevant actions can be taken.

First Mesra Usia Emas payout in Wangsa Maju

Pakatan Rakyat's Selangor State Administration has devised this scheme whereby qualifying Selangor senior citizens can name a beneficiary to get a total payout of RM2,500 upon their passing away; with a RM1,000 initial payment and RM1,500 to follow suit in 60 days' time.

There are 2 schools of thoughts in Malaysia:

1) School A think it is worthwhile to hand out some money in differing forms after a death with a by-election necessary thereon; and

2) School B think it is worthwhile to have a proper scheme whereby when a family's qualifying elder has passed away, a beneficiary previously approved by the demised would get a pre-determined amount, by-election or general election not withstanding.

H1N1 in Wangsa Maju

MP Wee Choo Keong's blog reports of a case of H1N1 in Wangsa Maju here. Thanks for the alert, EW.

Please refer the WHO's guidance documents on H1N1 here. If you read the WHO site carefully, it states here that entry and exit screening at airports, etc is not a entirely effective method of containing the disease. This is due to the nature of the disease which is airborne-spread. I agree with this, after being back from two airports last night. Thermal screening helps, but one or two infected fellows may escape being scanned especially when you have dozen of fellows barging into the immigration corridor.

Here's something to share on the effectiveness of airport thermal screening. A week before the H1N1 outbreak, at a foreign country, I walked through a thermal scan undetected despite having viral fever. My fever right at that particular moment had subsided but went back up again during my stay in that country.

Despite all this, the WHO is not recommending travel restrictions either- stating that such restrictions has little or no impact on the spread of such flu-like diseases. I personally stress the importance of not undermining the use of face-masks when one is an enclosed crowded area for a long duration of time and washing your hands on a more than regular basis especially after having shook hands. Also, companies is Malaysia which have presence in multinational environments have begun implementing measures to curb the spread of H1N1 and minimize losses. Such measures include health screening at company entrance for employees who are back from abroad, splitting operations and management into several teams for business continuity and so on.

At the point of posting this article, I still can't find any mainstream online news on this Wangsa Maju H1N1 case- I think news like this gets lost in the tons of political news that we get.

April 7 By-Elections in Batang Ai, Bukit Gantang and Bukit Selambau

Not many words in this post, just the video 'I Dreamt of Change' a blurry flashback from my video archives on the March 8 General Elections last year. Recut and remastered with A.R. Rahman and Suzzane's haunting score, Latika's Theme, from Slumdog Millionaire thrown in. Dedicated to the coming triple by-elections in Batang Ai, Bukit Gantang and Bukit Selambau on April 7 2009.

I was there when the Wangsa Maju election results were announced and Wangsa Maju MP Wee Choo Keong won by a margin of 150 votes. I think this is the only election results in Malaysian history where the postal votes worked in favor of the Opposition rather than BN.

Break-in at Wangsa Maju school

WANGSA MAJU KUALA LUMPUR , March 17- 3 foreigners broke into the compound of SJKC Mun Yee at Taman Teratai early Tuesday morning. After overpowering the sole security guard, the suspects made their way to the first floor of the school's administrative block and forced entry into the school staff room by shattering its glass window with a fire extinguisher. The suspects escaped with a microwave oven. No one was hurt.

By afternoon it was reported that the police had not yet made their way to the crime scene.

It was about 9pm when we reached Pusat Komuniti Ibu Kota Wangsa Maju where the town hall forum was being held. New mayor Datuk Ahmad Fuad is touring town meeting residents- the previous night it was Segambut constituency and tonight was Wangsa Maju's turn. No Pakatan Rakyat MPs are invited for this meet-the-residents series- but Wangsa Maju MP Wee Choo Keong turned up anyway. Since the election it is becoming a trend for KL MPs to be ignored, side-stepped or totally uninvited for official functions- so 'gate-crashing' is nothing new to this MP.

The majority of attendees were UMNO folk from various sections of Wangsa Maju. It was an eye-opener to listen to grievances of Wangsa Maju folk, but after an hour or so, the occasion got a bit repetitive and monotonous. I could sense the Datuk Bandar's aching ears. The good -gracious audience was falling asleep. The list of problems were the same- developer matters, land issues, parking woes, clogged drains, poor maintenance of public amenities, etc etc. A quick check in the waiting room saw drivers, security personnel hammering away on their own GameBoy/ Nintendo sets while waiting for their 'masters'.

Overall, the meeting was more of an UMNO meeting which could do better with fairer presentation from all races in Wangsa Maju.

Update: I heard that the Datuk Bandar later clarified these events were organized by his office people and he had no knowledge that the Pakatan Rakyat KL MPs were excluded from the town hall meetings held in their respective constituencies.

Obituary: A Wangsa Maju resident succumbs to cancer

Wangsa Maju resident Belinda Bateman, 40, succumbed to her illness last Friday, 13th Feb 2009 after a long-two-year battle with breast cancer. The Sun covers Belinda's struggle with her illness here. Belinda, a single mother, was born with congenital arthogryposis multiplex which results in multiple joint contractures leading to deformities.  Read the run-around given by EPF and SOCSO here.

Daily prayers from 8pm onwards (45 minutes) followed by a short gathering at 105, Block B10, Section 4, Wangsa Maju. Last day of prayer will be this Wednesday, 18th Feb.

Of Criminals and Racism

Robbed in Wangsa Maju

Recently a guy was robbed right in front of the Public Bank opposite Jaya Jusco in Wangsa Maju. The thief got away, but the victim recognised him somewhere outside a 7-11 store at another area in Wangsa Maju sometime later. The suspect was with an accomplice on a motorbike. A chase ensued and ended with the victim knocking down the suspects' motorbike with his car. The two suspects fled on foot but one was cornered by residents as he ran deeper in the housing area. The suspect was being bashed up as residents called up the 999 number. Since the police squad did not arrive after half an hour (the nearest police station is about 10 minutes away) some residents called up a neighbor (who is a police) who in turn called up the police station. A squad car arrived minutes later. The police pressed the bashed-up suspect for information and shortly a few other suspects were taken into custody.

By the way did anyone realise that it is a police tactic to delay response time by 30-40 minutes when a suspect is caught by members of the public, so as to allow the public to hentam the suspect a bit.

Highway car hijack

An associate of mine lost his just-bought Camry a year ago on the NKVE. The couple were on the way back from work when another Camry bumped into them from behind. As this couple alighted from their vehicle to 'settle' the matter, 4 guys emerged from the other Camry and apprehended the couple. The guy was slashed, while his wife was shuffled into their car by the two other fellows. The two cars drove off, leaving the guy victim by the road-side. For the wife, there is little guessing on the outcome. OK, the rape did not happened because she opened her car door and bailed herself out right in the middle of the highway. Both husband and wife was hospitalized for sometime, absent from work due to medical leave. Their car is not found till today.

No need to look far- even in Wangsa Maju there are numerous car hijacks and car thefts.

Crime and Malaysians

Noticed that I have omitted the race of the victims and the 'suspects'. Why is that so? Because it's a waste of time. Who cares which race committed the crime. The victims are us, any race any time. While there are demos and protests on racial grounds of Kugan the deceased car thief suspect, the fact exists there are brutal car thefts and there is that police brutality which guarantees a good bash-up on any suspect. The PDRM is stupid. The Minister of Internal Security is stupider- speaking harshly and arresting public protesters; 'investigating' the MPs who showed up at the mortuary at the request of the deceased's family will only deepen public sentiment of hatred towards the PDRM and the BN administration. And of late, conspiracy theories have cropped up on 'why' Kugan was 'murdered'. Can't blame the bloggers because they are sharp and think on the fly. If I've had my way I would not give the PDRM force another cent of increment. Who cares whether many of them are living below the poverty line. The police, as a collective whole, are failing in their jobs to protect the public.

Meanwhile the crimes are still happening and at most times the public is compelled to take the law into their own hands to protect themselves.

Desa Setapak is congested as ever

I had to drive through Desa Setapak to get something 2 nights ago- had to get dinner actually. Jalan 4/27a was traffic nightmare (road heading into Desa Setapak- on the left is Wangsa Metroview and right is Menara Alpha and the Section 2 flats) in the past but it's just gotten worst. Cars park on the left and right of Jalan 4/27a leaving only a small squeeze for my car. This area's economy and population is boomed, bursting at the seams. DBKL is not doing anything except carrying out raids on hawker shops and extorting money from shop operators for non-compliance. This place is a mess at night- and it's one of the best places to get food anytime.

Does anyone have any bright ideas to improve Desa Setapak?

What instant noodles tells us about the economy

A quick visit to Carrefour Express Wangsa Metroview last Wednesday showed that Maggi Mee perisa ayam (chicken flavor) had risen to RM4.50 for a 5-pack. I could not miss it because the huge Maggi mee display was right at the entrance of the store. Ironically the sign said 'special promotion'. The price was like RM3.15 per 5-pack right? Did you ever noticed how the price of the 5-pack reflects the price of a bowl of a mee in Malaysia. For example a bowl of mee in SSL Noodle Shop Wangsa Maju costs about the same without the extra add-ins. No rocket science there, but the price of the 5-pack Maggi mee is really close to the hawker's bowl of mee. At RM4.50 for 5, instant noodles are no longer poor man's food, but one single pack is still about 20% of the price of a bowl of noodles.

The main fuse of Wee Choo Keong's office blew last Wednesday night and operations shifted from the office to the coffee shop downstairs. Business continued past 12 am thereon.
