Self cannibalization: the latest political tool to win at all costs

According to this report by China Press, which surely would not make it even to the dust bins of Utusan Malaysia  sub editors, an  interesting elector roll management trend” (to call it politely) has emerged in Seremban.

Google gives Malaysia a miss

"Google is establishing a stronger international presence with the purchase of land for data centers in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Ireland..." SearchEngineWatch, 3rd October, 2011.

The same news release mentions that Google chooses Ireland to capitalize on its cool weather to minimize energy costs. My guess on Google opening data centres in Hong Kong and Singapore is the ease of doing business in those countries. Singapore already ranks as the world's number one in terms business friendliness for five consecutive years. Hong Kong comes in at second place. Both countries have almost similar business cultures but on the socio-political end, Singapore is managed on a socialist model while Hong Kong, a mixture-model of socialist and capitalist.

Acid Attacks: PDRM dragging their feet

The splasher attacks began on March 2 after eight students and a teacher from SK Bukit Bandaraya in Jalan Bangkung, Bangsar, were splashed with a burning substance by a motorcyclist. Since then, a total of more than 20 people have already suffered either minor or severe burns at the hands of these culprits.- The Star

Kewibawaan Berita Harian serta Biro Kajian UMNO

Dua minggu lalu, Berita Harian memaparkan artikel muka surat hadapan ini

http://www.bharian.com.my/bharian/articles/NGOMelayucaripengundiMelayu/Article/print_html

NGO Melayu cari pengundi
30 Jun 2010

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Suruhan pilihanraya kini mengesahkan bahawa KAJIAN BIRO UMNO itu langsung tak betul sekali.

Pakatan trumps BN in registering new voters
By G. Manimaran

PUTRAJAYA, July 18 — Pakatan Rakyat (PR) continues to lead in the voter registration drive, signing up twice the number of voters compared to Barisan Nasional (BN) in the first six month of 2010.

The DAP also lead in signing up more voters compared to other political parties, registering 32.5 per cent of the new 169,838 voters registered between January and June this year. Umno followed closely behind, registering 32.3 per cent of the new voters while PAS, 22.7 per cent in the same duration.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.2 UMNO giat mendaftarkan pengundi bukan Melayu hingga terpinggir sasaran asal mereka

Karpal sedition trial: Reporter says she does not know Karpal's political party

Friday, 14 August 2009 14:38

(The Star) KUALA LUMPUR: There was a sense of disbelief in court Friday morning when a reporter said she did not know the political party which Karpal Singh belonged to.

RTM reporter Eliani Mazlan, 26, who took the witness stand on the third day of Karpal’s sedition trial, was cross-examination by Jagdeep Singh Deo.

Jagdeep: Do you know which party is Karpal Singh from?
Eliani : I am not sure.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PUTRAJAYA: The fate of Suara Keadilan, the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) newspaper, will be decided at a meeting of the Home Ministry today, Publications Control and Quranic Text Division secretary Datuk Zaitun Ab Samad said.

"The ministry is fair to all publications. However, political party newspapers can be distributed only to members." -- Bernama

Slogan 1Malaysia pun berbunyi "Performance Now"....maka sama-sama kita tengok apa akan berlakulah.

Who's jumping ship now? What's happenin?

This article appeared in The Sun today. At the posting of this blog, several sites picked up the story as well. Thanks to a friend who alerted me.

Jeff clarified via a sms that he had been misquoted by The Sun and somehow The Sun had reported the story without speaking to Jeff. Wee Choo Keong is also surprised and shocked- he has no bone to pick with Jeff. I look up to both MPs- Jeff for his pioneering work in the socio-political blogosphere and Wee, for his fearless brazen attitude in the Parliament.

Now what's happening. It's ambiguous press reports like these that create havoc. What's the intention?

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 5, 2010): Parti Keadilan Rakyat's (PKR) Wangsa Maju MP Wee Choo Keong today demanded that DAP's Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi retract his statement that four PKR MPs will be crossing over to the Barisan Nasional (BN) in the next 20 days.

Wee told a press conference that Ooi's statement had caused his name to be mentioned as one of the potential MPs to switch camp and he would like to categorically deny the accusation as he has no intention of joining any of the BN component parties or pro-BN parties.

He said DAP leaders play the "politics of tagging" whenever its leaders were faced with problems and they start a smear campaign to accuse others as being "BN agents, disgruntled politicians, jumping ships and etc" instead of addressing the real problems that have been highlighted.

"This is similar to the McCarthyism practised in America in the 1960s where most political problems faced by the power-that-be were said to be acts of sabotage by Communists.

"This style of low politics can carry on in the DAP, but must be stopped within the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) if we are serious in wanting to see a change of government in the 13th general election," he said.

Wee said Ooi has made a wrong political judgement if he thinks his "politics of McCarthyism" or "politics of tagging" will be able to divert public attention from the present controversies..

"It was most unexpected that Jeff Ooi saw it fit to drag me into the controversies by making irresponsible and unfounded allegations against me.

"I believe that due to the nature of his job and being a novice in politics, he had to do what he did.

"I do not like to sue politicians and newspapers but I am left with no alternative if Jeff Ooi does not retract what he had told theSun within 48 hours. I am sorry, Jeff Ooi, as I have to do what I have to do - just like you," he added.

theSun's Press Digest today reported that Oriental Daily had quoted Jeff Ooi as alleging that four PR MPs would cross over to BN in the next 20 days.

Ooi, who is also chief of staff to Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, had named Bayan Baru MP Datuk Seri Zahrain Mohamad Hashim and Nibong Tebal MP Tan Tee Beng, adding that two more PKR MPs from other states would also jump camp.

The vernacular newspaper had also speculated that other than Wee, Kelana Jaya MP Loh Gwo Burne might be crossing over the BN.

Ooi had said disgruntled PKR politicians were sabotaging the PR from within to kill two birds with one stone -- to test the leadership capability of Penang PKR Deputy Chief Minister Dr Mansor Othman and to create internal conflict in the state PR.

Left: Old Bloghouse pic.

On Jan 29, Zahrain had criticised Lim as "dictator, chauvinist and communist-minded" and that PR should stop compromising with Lim as the latter had failed to deliver his general election promises.

On Wednesday, Tan also called for Lim to be removed as chief minister, saying the latter was a disgrace to the state and its people.

Wee today agreed with Tan that PKR deputy president Dr Syed Husin Ali, strategic director and Batu MP Tian Chua, as well as vice-president and Subang MP R. Sivarasa, who were Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) leaders, should receive showcause letters and be probed under the disciplinary committee because of the status of the PRM.

He said these ex-PRM leaders did not appeal the High Court decision in July last year which ruled that PRM is still a valid party even after merging with PKR.

"The merger was a lie. These leaders must come out to explain to the public," he said.

Ubahlah sikap pengajaran - Hasleen Bachik (Puan)

The Straits Times Novemrber 19, 2009

Saya belum berputus asa lagi. Bukan sekarang lagi.

Hukuman penjara dan sebat kerana menyerang kaum lain

Laporan Oriental Daily 12 September 2009
Singapore 11hb September

Let Malaysians advertise Pendet and wayang

The Jakarta Post/Asia News Network
By: Riyadi Suparno

We Indonesians are simply overreacting in our response to Malaysia's use of the Balinese Pendet dance in promotional TV spots. We are acting like a big brother and bullying our younger brother. And such responses will not help us become a better nation.

First, it was a small protest from a group of Balinese people, the rightful owner of the dance, then unfortunately it grew into a nationwide condemnation of Malaysia.

Just read the comments posted at www.thejakartapost.com or many other Internet forums discussing the issue, and you will easily find many condemnations from Indonesians against Malaysia, some even urging the government to ganyang (invade) Malaysia, invoking memories of the time Indonesia was in confrontation with Malaysia.

Unwisely, the government responded in the same way, with the tourism minister summoning the Malaysian embassy's top official and sending a letter of protest to his counterpart in Kuala Lumpur.

But it did not stop there. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono joined the fray, calling on the Malaysian government to deal more carefully with "sensitive" cultural issues between the two countries.

Our responses have really gone too far. Just read this news from Antara: Diponegoro University (Undip), one of Indonesia's leading institutes of higher learning, has stopped admitting Malaysian students for the 2009-2010 academic year in an expression of "nationalism".

"We have done it as a concrete expression of our sense of nationalism," Undip rector Susilo Wibowo said Tuesday as quoted by Antara, after attending a ceremony to mark the induction of new students.

But we don't know the real reasons behind it. It could be because there were no Malaysian students applying to study at the university this academic year, which begins in July.

The point here is that we just overreacted to this issue, or worse, we tried to bully one of our closest neighbors.

Malaysia uses various Asian cultural expressions, especially Chinese and Indian, in its tourism campaign "Malaysia Truly Asia". China and India have never protested Malaysia's use of their cultural heritage in its tourism campaigns.

Why then are we so angry whenever Malaysia uses our cultural heritage, including the Pendet, batik and wayang in their tourism campaigns? In reality, though, Malaysia has never claimed the Pendet as their dance, batik as their craft or wayang as their performance.
These are Indonesian cultural expressions brought to Malaysia by the millions of Indonesians who moved there, mostly as migrant workers.

If it's an issue of rights, we don't have copyrights for most of our cultural products. Much, if not the majority of our cultural heritage, was created by our ancestors for the good of society and mankind.

For instance, many of our best classical Javanese gamelan compositions were written by anonymous composers. They were composed for the kings and the people, and the composers deliberately did not put their names there, much less copyrighted them.

Before Indonesia existed, anyone could play these compositions, even people from outside the Javanese kingdom. Now that Indonesia exists, does it mean nobody outside Indonesia can play and use them in their tourism campaigns, even if they have gamelan groups in their own countries?

Currently, hundreds of gamelan groups exist outside Indonesia. If they wish to promote their groups or if their country wishes to use these gamelan groups to promote tourism, they have every right to use gamelan images in their campaign.

Thus instead of getting angry or sending letter of protests or stopping admitting Malaysian students, we should be more positive and collaborate with the Malaysian government to promote our culture in that country.

When there are more Malaysians dancing the Pendet and playing the gamelan and to Indonesian pop songs, it will only mean more benefits, and not losses, to Indonesia. It will mean more commerce and tourism between the two countries.

Not only that, it would also strengthen cultural ties between the two nations.

Similarly, if Malaysia advertises more Indonesian cultural heritage, it would bring more benefits than losses to us.

Lets say, Malaysia advertises the Pendet, and tourists go there because of the advertisement. There is a great chance these tourists will continue on to Bali to see the Pendet at its source. So it not only saves us precious advertising dollars - which we rarely ever spend anyway - but also brings in dollar from more tourist visits.
So let Malaysians dance our Pendet and play our wayang and advertise them. It will only do good things for us in Indonesia.

Chua Soi Lek sacked from MCA

The news are here, here and here. Sleaze-filled party worse than a 1980's soap-opera. A continuous reminder on why not to vote for them.

What do you think of the MCA?

Lee Kuan Yew on Racial Matters in Singapore

Check out The NST's (Singapore) publication of LKY's speech at the Singapore Parliament recently. The link is here. Mentor Minister Lee gives a very down-to-earth and realistic viewpoint on race relations, which is radically different and from what led to the Malaysia-Singapore separation in 1965. Also please checkout diverse readers' comments on the same article, here. The readers strike a good point on the difference between 'fair' and being 'equal'.

Check out the You Tube videos here and here.

Sheer bravado and hard work for nation-building? I think this is one element that's missing from the typical Malaysian who spends his or her time mostly worrying about racial 'fairness' or 'equality'.

Every Malaysian should look at themselves in the mirror every morning and ask what they can do for their country and not ask what the country can do for them (phrase from John F. Kennedy).

Undoing the Internet

The decision to censor the internet in Malaysia has been on and then off; but is it really off? Let's checkout a few Ministers' Press statements of late:

"...internal threats in the form of comments via blogs are becoming more dangerous than external elements, as they sow the seeds of restlessness among the various races...", Datuk Seri Ng Yen Yen- MCA Vice President. The Star Aug 14, 2009.

"We want to look at how parents react to the extreme display of child pornography in the Net, Internet gambling and postings that can encourage terrorism...", Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim Information, Communications, Culture and Arts Minister. Bernama Aug 13, 2009.

"But it's got nothing to do with censorship...", Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim Information, Communications, Culture and Arts Minister. Bernama Aug 13, 2009.

Censorship or not, it depends how lawmakers in the country want to define the words 'censorship', 'terrorism', 'dangerous blogs' and so on. Worse still, political blogging against the Malaysian Government could be well labeled as cyber-terrrorism if there's any chance that the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 or Internal Security Act 1960 is 'revamped'. Yes, political blogging can become an outlawed activity in the future if 'non-BN' bloggers are seen to be terrorists. The stakes are high in the political arena when it comes to press freedom and dissemination of information on the internet- the 2008 General Election results was an example of this.

Looking at the table below, can anyone notice any similarities between Malaysia with any of the countries listed down here:

And today, the guy who hid behind the keris (guess who) says:
“We are not clamping or censoring the Internet. But when it comes to issues involving race, religion and our royalty, the Internet cannot be allowed to go on to de-stabilise the country and do whatever they like...”.

Thanks to the keris-raising scene by the person above 2 years back (a 'salivating' threat to the extinction of a percentage of the population in the country) which will be immortalized in pictures and video for generations to come, there was a raise in political awareness amongst citizens whom were sitting on the fence because the scene scared the crap out of them. Now, he's talking about the internet being a destabilizing factor? Indeed I find Malaysia quite near to either one or all of the political systems depicted in the table above.

Lastly, if you have noticed, the phrase "..we will not censor the internet..." appears many times in the Ministers' press statements, followed by other conditions. If you get my drift, this is how 'no censorship' of the internet is defined in Malaysia.

Malaysia's chameleon

The rise, fall and rise of Anwar Ibrahim, South-East Asia’s most extraordinary politician

One evening in mid-July Anwar Ibrahim was deep in the rubber-tapping state of Kelantan in northern Malaysia, urging a crowd of rural folk to vote for a devout fishmonger. The candidate was from the conservative Islamic Party (PAS). A tiny by-election for the state assembly PAS already dominates is ordinarily small beer (or would be, if PAS allowed such a beverage, which it does not). But Mr Anwar needs PAS. For the paradox is that without the Islamists, the alliance he leads of Malay modernisers, Indians and secular Chinese has little chance of driving the ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) from power. The coalition that UMNO dominates has ruled Malaysia since independence in 1957. Mr Anwar longs for UMNO’s destruction. The feeling is mutual.

That morning, Mr Anwar had been in Perth where he had met Australia’s foreign minister. What had he been doing with Stephen Smith? “Plotting,” replies Mr Anwar, with a conspiratorial wink. Mr Anwar spends a lot of time abroad with national and religious leaders whose names he drops slightly too easily into an engaging conversational style. He moves like quicksilver from one intriguing subject to the next, but you get the uncanny sense that he is speaking to what interests you.

Mr Anwar thinks he will soon need international support. Two days after stumping in Kelantan, pre-trial hearings began in a case in which Mr Anwar stands accused of sodomising a political aide “against the order of nature”. Mr Anwar vigorously denies the charges. He says he is the victim of a political stitch-up. International outrage might help him. Much is fishy about the case. Photographs of the former aide who brought the accusations show him with UMNO members, including people close to the current prime minister, Najib Razak. The charge has been changed from sexual assault to “consensual sex”, yet his accuser has not been charged. (All homosexuality is illegal in Malaysia.)

Mr Anwar has been here before. In 1998 he was charged with corruption and homosexual acts. In custody, he was beaten up by the chief of police. He spent six years in jail, mostly in solitary confinement, until his conviction was overturned. Upon release, his political career seemed over.

It is easy to forget now but for many years Mr Anwar led a charmed life. He made his name as an Islamist student leader in the 1970s and was even jailed under the draconian Internal Security Act. Then he shocked his former colleagues by joining UMNO, where his rise was spectacular. By 1993 he was deputy prime minister and heir to Mahathir Mohamad, the country’s long-serving leader. Malaysia seemed about to fall into his lap. “Ah,” says Mr Anwar, “the good old days.”

But during the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98, Mr Anwar moved too soon against his mentor, who after 16 years in power was not ready to bow out. Mr Anwar railed against the UMNO cronyism from which he had benefited. Livid, Dr Mahathir threw him out of the cabinet and launched Mr Anwar’s persecution. Mr Anwar’s reformasi movement sputtered out with his jailing.

Yet the hopes which that movement represented surged again after the general election of March 2008, and especially after August 2008 when Mr Anwar won a seat in Penang. In the election the ruling coalition lost its precious two-thirds majority which gave it power to change the constitution. It has since lost five out of six by-elections to Mr Anwar’s forces, which also control four of 13 states. In getting out its message, the opposition has been helped by an explosion of internet opinion that has undermined the influence of the UMNO-controlled mainstream media.

UMNO’s back is against the wall. Even its own officials admit to its arrogance, with corruption bound into the fabric of its power. The New Economic Policy (NEP, introduced in 1971) instituted racial preferences for majority Malays, when ethnic Chinese and Indians owned much of business. But instead of helping the poor, the NEP has enriched rent-seekers around the ruling party, while dragging down economic growth. Resentment has spread from Chinese and Indians to poor or pious Malays.

This has made possible Mr Anwar’s strange alliance. In calling for the end to the NEP, he says poor Chinese and Indians need help as much as Malays—but because there are more poor Malays than other races, they will still get the lion’s share of government help. It is a possible way out from the baneful influence of race on Malaysian politics. But the real strength of this alliance is that Mr Anwar’s charisma and political nous holds it together. Alas, that it is potential weakness, too.
Trials and tribulations

The challenges for Mr Anwar and his alliance will now multiply. For a start, Mr Najib, prime minister since April, has said the NEP must adapt, stealing some of his opponent’s thunder.

Then there is the time-consuming trial. Mr Anwar says he will win whatever the verdict. If he is acquitted, the government which brought the case will be discredited. If found guilty, tens of thousands of supporters will take to the streets. Mr Anwar hints tantalisingly at new information in a murder case that has gripped the country partly because of its links to Mr Najib. This, he suggests, gives him ammunition to fight back.

Intriguing, but it is unlikely to be enough. If Mr Anwar does go to jail, the alliance may not survive the loss of its leader. If he calls out his supporters—for something of the martyr lurks in him—he may be blamed for the ensuing chaos. And if he appeals to international opinion, his local supporters may question that.

This points to a trap waiting to catch the silver-tongued Mr Anwar, who deftly tells different audiences—religious or secular—what they like to hear. The same blogosphere that helped his meteoric rise may one day pay more attention to his chameleon qualities. Malaysians would then come to ask more closely: who and what exactly does Anwar stand for?

Cops probe report against Exco member with "underworld connections"

Maria J.Dass

SHAH ALAM (July 16, 2009) : Police have begun investigations into reports against a Selangor executive council (exco) member following allegations that his office was being used as a base by underworld figures to conduct their activities.

Wangsa Maju PKR parliamentarian Wee Choo Keong, who made the allegations in a July 11 blog posting, was today questioned for two-and-a-half-hours by officers from the D7 (Anti-vice and gaming division) of the Selangor Police Contigent headquarters here.

Emerging from the building he told reporters that he was interviewed by two officers who recorded his statement and collected all documents relating to his allegations against the executive councillor.

At a press conference later Selangor CPO Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said investigations were being conducted under Section 233 of the Multimedia Act.

"The Commercial Crimes Department and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have been tasked to work on this case," he said.

Asked why Wee was questioned by D7 officers, he said the Section 233 of the Multimedia Act allows the police to initiate investigations which are now being conducted by the CID and Commercial Crimes Investigations Department, but the case will be reclassified if the need arises.

"We will be calling more witnesses," said Abdul Khalid.

Wee told reporters that he had named the exco involved when he gave his statement to the police.

"I have given them all the relevant documents," he said but would not confirm if these included picture and videos.

"It is best you ask the police about this," Wee said, while declining to reveal the identity of the exco.

He said he had given a few names of informants and complainants to the police and they may be called in soon to provide more leads into the case.

Wee said he had been "advised" by friends not to play with fire (by raising the allegations against a fellow Pakatan Rakyat politician) but said these were risks that politicians had to take.

Asked about DAP's Selangor exco for local authorities and research and development Ronnie Liu’s challenge to him to ‘be a man’ and name the person concerned, Wee said: "Don’t push me too hard, I am a man that’s why I’m here speaking to the police."

"Why is he worried? I never named him and the other eight excos have not said anything either," he added.

Meanwhile, Liu at a press conference earlier said that he was ready face any interrogation from the police and the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) pertaining to the allegations.

"What do I have to be afraid of, I am ready if they come, I have not done anything wrong so what do I have to be afraid of?" he told reporters.

He said he had yet to be contacted by the police or MACC officers on the matter.

"I have not taken any commissions, and all the expenditure of my allocations are stated in my blog- colourblind.org," Liu said.

"I am very transparent," he added.

Anwar's stand of the use of English

Anwar's stand on policy of teaching Science and Mathematics in the Press surprised me a bit.

I took the liberty of going into You Tube to check recorded speeches of Anwar, past and present, on matters related to Bahasa Melayu and English and found a couple of videos which could be of interest to the public.

Well Anwar stands for the Bahasa Melayu as prime language that's for sure. But it's been spinned out of proportion by The Star headlines. The headline above gives the impression that Anwar is outrightly against the use of English. However in that particluar interview, Anwar gave a more elaborative and balanced explanation of what he meant. Check out the below video and see what I mean.

Pemuda UMNO melarang aktiviti pendaftaran pengundi, perbalahan tercetus

Terjemahan Laporan Sin Chew Jit Poh 4 Julai 2009

Pendaftaran pengundi cetuskan perbalahan
3 orang cendera termasuk dua orang ADUN

Laporan di akhbar Sin Chew Jit Poh yang berkenaan

Ulasan foto

See Liow ('Already Dead'- Hokkien)

When my flight from Jakarta touched down KLIA at 10.45pm last night, I noticed the H1N1 screening counters (right before the Immigration checkpoint) had closed shop. Passengers just walked right into the country without thermal screening. If someone in that flight was carrying the H1N1, we would have had it (I'm crossing my fingers for the 7-day watch-period to be over without an incident for myself). Referring to the highlighted Bernama report above, I think the Health Minister doesn't know what's actually happening on the ground (Woi, don't la call upon the PDRM and Immigration to help watch out for the potential H1N1 infected; the PDRM has their fare share of issues such as illegal airport taxi touts to take care of, potential drug smugglers to watch out for etc. The Immigration on the other hand has their own stuff to care of).

Anyway, on the other flights which I have been through at the KLIA these bunch of guys behind the thermal cameras really look bored and sleepy each time I pass them. I wonder if they really concentrate on the thermal screens or just looking at the lenglui passengers? Are there checks to ensure officers deployed to the entry and exit points do their jobs effectively. For a virus which has the potential to develop into something fatal, such slack controls adopted at our entry and exit points is definitely not it.

Below: H1N1 advisory cards handed out at the KLIA upon arrival of passengers.
Yup, this is flu control.
